Churches Gather To Celebrate Good Friday
Last year’s Reno-Tahoe CityFest movement provided for several multi-church prayer gatherings and it’s been an initiative shared by many to carry on the momentum of those events.
This is exactly what occurred with the One Voice Prayer & Worship Night hosted on Friday, April 3 at Outlook Church.
According to Pastor Dan Dix, who helped to lead up the effort, more than 440 were in attendance with ten churches participating in an evening to celebrate Good Friday together.
“We were so encouraged by the turnout,” fellow event organizer Pastor Angelo Austria says. “People just kept coming.”
Whether or not your church was formerly involved in the event, everyone was welcome to join in this precious time of prayer and praise. There was even a special program for children to celebrate Good Friday as well.
The goal is to try to organize similar churchwide prayer events on at least a quarterly basis.
Did your church participate? If not, and you’re a church leader, reach out to Pastor Dan Dix to make sure that you’re an early participant of the next one.
Wes Duncan Encourages Believers To Be Effective With Prayer
Community leader Wes Duncan spoke at Christian Business Connections on Friday, April 10 and encouraged believers to follow what he described as the “Model Prayer” taught by Jesus in Matthew 6:9-13.
In breaking down elements of “The Lord’s Prayer”, Duncan described how we should exercise both “reverence” and “closeness” in our prayer time, and he explained how valuable it is to have private and secret time with God.
Too often, he said, we only pray in the company of others, where it becomes more of a public show of our faith, than an authentic expression of our eagerness to share time with God.
Duncan, who is running for the office of Washoe County District Attorney this year, emphasized how important it is for us to seek out God’s will here on Earth.
“We need to be prayed up and intimate with God to meet the moment in our culture,” Duncan said.
Next month’s featured speaker is Brad Dacus of the Pacific Justice Institute on Friday, May 1 at the Encounter Ministry building (9222 Prototype Drive) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
1Conference Youth Event Changes Lives and Brings the Church Together
In what turned out to be a textbook display of church collaboration, youth pastors in the community worked together to host a spectacularly successful event for area middle and high schoolers.
Called 1Conference 2026, the event featured talented speakers including Anthony Ortiz, Jon Rush, Josh White, and Hannah Floch. It also showcased gifted musicians Christian Lane, Tre Mutava, and Grayson Kredit. The conference was hosted at Grace Church on March 6 and 7.
The event’s stated goals were to “Unite the Church” and to “Awaken the Region to Jesus” and you can declare those “Mission Accomplished” in flashing lights.
According to Pastor Jack Quinn of Grace Church, who served as event director, the stats are impressive. Over 500 students attended and enjoyed the four main sessions, two concerts, and 13 breakout sessions, as well as great food and entertainment.
There were 15 churches represented, and an additional nine youth ministries participated. Approximately 75 volunteers and youth leaders assisted with making the event safe and overflowing with the Holy Spirit.
It’s believed there were more than 50 decisions for Christ as a result of all the hard work that went into putting this anointed event together.
For Pastor Jack and the team of youth pastors that coordinated the project together, this is just the beginning of an effort to unite the Church. Other key contributors included: Shane Marks (Grace Church Lead Pastor), Jack Kinnaman (Grace Middle School Director), Brett Long (Life Church Youth Pastor), Joshua Kundsen (Pastor from Horizon Church). They were also assisted by student interns Blake Laub, Gunnar Annis, and Matt Croarkin.

Innovative Way To Serve The Less Fortunate
It was history in the making earlier this month as the first of many “Open Tables” was launched in the Reno-Tahoe area by Jack Vonich and a small group of pioneers.
Open Table is a brilliant concept of a ministry that helps people in need by connecting them with volunteers and community resources.
The core of Open Table is small groups called “Tables” composed of volunteers that use their networking resources to assist those in need. These Tables identify the goals of their “clients” and work together to remove barriers preventing them from achieving those goals.
Practical examples could be assisting with a car repair, providing a bicycle for transportation, or installing a wheel chair ramp at an individual’s home.
It’s a rapidly growing national ministry and the hope is that there will be dozens of these Tables serving others here in the community. These Tables can be launched by churches or organizations, or individuals interested in displaying the heart of Jesus to those in need.
For more information you can contact Jack at opentable@vonich.com or 775-981-0166.

Pastor Kyle Bateson Speaks About "Embodied Leadership"
Kyle Bateson, the lead pastor for Living Stones Church, joined Christian Business Connections on March 6 to provide some wisdom with the approximately 50 business owners and leaders for their monthly lunch gathering.
In his talk titled Embodied Leadership, Pastor Kyle Bateson shared about the importance of recognizing that we are embodied souls, created and loved by God. Stewarding our physical bodies is not separate from our spiritual lives. It is an act of worship that strengthens our relationship with God and shapes us into more faithful and effective leaders.
Drawing from his background as a former athlete, personal trainer, executive leader, and now pastor, Kyle shared practical insights on how physical stewardship impacts mental clarity, emotional resilience, and spiritual vitality.
He shared how because of sin, we’ve experienced a broken experience, a broken perspective, and a broken connection when it comes to our bodies. With proper stewardship we can recover through Christ’s strength by changing how we listen, sleep, eat, become more active, and live a life on mission.
In addition to sharing this powerful message, Pastor Kyle offered stories of how Living Stones was founded, and the opportunities they face today through God’s provision.
Mike Alger Shares Stories Of Faith And Weather
How did a wireline geologist from Beaverton, Oregon end up being one of Reno, Nevada’s most treasured and long-tenured television personalities?
According to Mike Alger, the recently retired broadcast weatherman, it was all a result of listening to God.
At the monthly Christian Business Connection meeting (the first Friday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at the Encounter Ministry building), Mike challenged all in attendance to answer an important question:
“What are you doing with your life that has eternal consequences?”
Mike shared his journey from his youth growing up, to his college years, and then his early career as a geologist. In his talk, titled “You just never know”, he explained how he ended up taking such a circuitous route to becoming a weatherman.
Probably the most surprising part of his career pathway was the fact that he never left Reno to pursue jobs in larger markets, which was his original plan. Mike shared that sometimes keeping where you’re at is the best way to obey God. For Mike, this meant getting to focus on his family, his faith, and the community he loves to serve.

Citywide Collaboration Effort Forming
In October, many Christians gathered to celebrate the Reno-Tahoe CityFest movement which culminated with a large, outdoor festival at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park last August.
Prior to this event, a small group of ministry leaders met to discuss launching a formalized effort to keep this movement and collaboration between churches moving forward.
They listened to wisdom shared by Gary Gaddini, who leads Transforming the Bay with Christ (TBC), and who is also connected to a national network of cities similarly hoping to lead their cities to Christ.
The result is there is a new entity forming consisting of pastors and ministry leaders to develop a more permanent and more integrated system of communication and collaboration.
It’s led by Pastor Dan Dix, and is supported by the prayer and input of more than 30 pastors in the area. Plans have been underway for more than two years, and was intended to benefit by the momentum caused by the Reno-Tahoe CityFest effort.
We’ll share more on Hope Herald of these encouraging developments as they progress.
